The 14 major stars are the leading actors of Zi Wei Dou Shu — six in the Zi Wei group and eight in the Tian Fu group — and which palace each star sits in decides the area of life it shapes. Open a Zi Wei Dou Shu chart (the mingpan) and you'll see a whole sky of stars, but the reading revolves around the 14 major stars. Each star has a personality of its own, and which star lands in which palace sets the tone for that corner of your life. You can cast your own chart with the Zi Wei Dou Shu chart tool — and if the chart, the 12 palaces, and the Four Transformations still feel unfamiliar, start with What is Zi Wei Dou Shu? (the basics).

A star is always read with its palace

The same star means something different depending on the palace it occupies. Wu Qu in the Wealth Palace, for instance, reads as sharp financial instincts; in the Career Palace, it reads as a driven, get-it-done professional life.

Multiplying the star's personality (the major star) by its stage (the palace) is the heart of Zi Wei Dou Shu.

Layer in the Four Transformations (Si Hua) you met in the basics guide — noting which stars they land on — and the reading grows sharper still.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to memorize all 14 major stars?

No. Start with the stars sitting in the palaces you actually care about — the Life Palace, the Wealth Palace, the Career Palace, and so on. Look at charts often enough and the rest fall into place on their own.

Is Zi Wei the best star to have?

It is the foremost star, true — but without help from the assisting stars, it can end up a "lonely emperor" with no court. Zi Wei alone is never enough to call a chart good or bad.

Is it bad to have Qi Sha or Po Jun?

No. Qi Sha (the "Seven Killings" star) and Po Jun (the "Army Breaker") are stars of upheaval and pioneering, so they can look rough at first glance — but pointed in the right direction, they become powerful drive and breakthrough force. Fortune is never judged from a single star; it's read alongside the palaces and the Four Transformations.

Can two major stars land in the same palace?

Yes. Certain pairings — Zi Wei with Tian Fu, Wu Qu with Tan Lang — sit together in one palace. In that case, you blend the two stars' personalities into one reading.
